What is Limecrete?

Limecrete is a type of concrete that uses lime instead of Portland cement as the main binding agent. It is mixed with selected aggregates such as sharp sand, recycled materials, or lightweight additives like hemp or expanded clay.

This unique composition makes limecrete breathable, allowing moisture to move freely through the material. Unlike standard concrete, which traps moisture, limecrete helps to reduce problems with rising damp, condensation, and mould growth.

For this reason, limecrete is the preferred choice for heritage and listed buildings across Yorkshire and the North West, particularly where maintaining the structural integrity and breathability of a property is essential.

Why Choose Limecrete?

Limecrete offers several distinct advantages over traditional concrete:

  • Environmentally Friendly – Lime has a lower carbon footprint than cement and even absorbs CO₂ during the curing process, making it a greener, more sustainable building material.
  • Moisture Control & Breathability – Perfect for older buildings in places like Yorkshire, Manchester, and Lancashire, where damp issues are common in stone-built houses.
  • Durable & Flexible – Limecrete naturally moves with a building, reducing the risk of cracks that often occur with modern concrete.
  • Improved Thermal Performance – When combined with lightweight aggregates such as hemp or expanded clay, limecrete provides natural insulation, helping to keep homes warmer and more energy efficient.
  • Underfloor Heating Compatible – Limecrete works exceptionally well with underfloor heating systems, offering smooth heat distribution throughout your property.

Where Limecrete is Commonly Used

At Spot On Concrete, we supply limecrete for a wide range of applications across Yorkshire and beyond:

  • Heritage building restoration – Maintaining breathability in listed buildings and period properties.
  • Eco-friendly new builds – Sustainable foundations and flooring for environmentally conscious construction projects.
  • Conservation work – Ideal for sensitive restoration projects in historic areas such as Leeds, York, and Manchester.
  • Floor replacements – Solving damp issues in older stone cottages, farmhouses, and Victorian terraces across Yorkshire and the North West.
  • Green building projects – Perfect for builders and architects focusing on sustainability.

Limestone Considerations:

  • Curing time is slower than cement-based concrete – can take weeks to fully set.
  • Cost is usually higher due to materials and specialist labour.
  • Specialist knowledge needed – not all builders are familiar with limecrete installation.
  • Needs careful moisture management during laying to prevent cracking or uneven curing.
